A Certified Standard for Upholstery Cleaning

We are happy to have in our hands a copy of the IICRC's latest project: The S300 Standard for Upholstery Cleaning.

The document contains (1) HOW to properly clean using any of the 5 methods of cleaning:

1. Dry Solvent

2. Absorbent Compound

3. Dry Foam

4. Shampoo

5. Hot Water (HWE) Extraction, also called "Steam"

Included is also a section on Leather Cleaning and Combination cleaning methods, and a note about Fabric Protectors.

( 2) A separate section entitled "Reference Guide for Professional Upholstery Cleaning" including 2 chapters, Upholstery Fiber Cleaning Characteristics, and Upholstery Construction Related to Cleaning.

2 Appendixes follow:

A - Information for Consumers of Upholstery Cleaning Services. (This is the most helpful for you the consumer on how to maintain upholstery by home cleaning and then tips on how to select a professional cleaning firm, and then what to expect from that firm) B - Pre-cleaning/ Post-cleaning Inspection checklist for Professional Cleaning. The Reference guide also has abbreviations in use, a 34-page glossary of terms frequently used in the upholstery cleaning profession, conversion chart and reference list of sources

The standard is one of four now available from IICRC:

S001 (Carpet) On-Location Cleaning $10.00

S300 Upholstery Cleaning $25.00

S500 Water Damage Restoration $35.00

IICRC (Carpet ) Inspection $12.50

Each of the above standards cost includes shipping and handling, and any may be ordered from

Other IICRC News

The IICRC has announced another Category which has been added to their certifications: FCT: Floor Care Technician. This is for all those who maintain hard surface floors such as vinyl tile, ceramic, painted and/or sealed concrete, etc.

For inspectors, their fields are enlarging also. To be now included in Substrate Inspection are: Marble & Stone Inspector, Wood & Laminates Inspector, Ceramic Tile Inspector and Resilient Floor Inspector.

This is good news for our company. I have stripped vinyl floors since before our company began in October, 1986, and though I have had excellent training, I have also ran into areas where I felt a definite lack of knowledge.

The Hidden Factor

Often in cleaning Carpet and Upholstery in homes we observe many do not realize hidden factors are involved.

Carpet (or any textile, for that matter) creates a hidden environment that we like. 1) It make the surface softer. Maybe this is why the CRI advertised "It just feels better." 2) It makes the surface quieter. The noise factor is increasingly a problem and carpets have made a significant change in softening the loudness of newer generations.

But it also creates a hidden environment that we do not like. Carpet and upholstery create huge areas for soil and other unwanted contaminants including dust mites and other allergens. The cleaning time required often extend the job time and thus the job cost. This explains why we take longer than other cleaners. The result is a cleaner piece and thus a longer time between cleanings.

CHOICE Considerations

There are many of our customers selecting upholstery and carpet. Ask yourself this question BEFORE you buy: Will I like this piece in 3 years as much as I like it in the show room now? How about in 5 years? Like to keep it 10 years? Longer? Here are key concepts to keep in mind so that the purchase will satisfy you long as you want the carpet or upholstery piece:

bulletAvoid EXTREMES of the color spectrum (not real dark, and not real light.)
bulletAvoid SOLIDS since they tend to show variation and soil quickly.
bulletIncorporate SCULPTURING, such as cut & loop, multilevel cut or loop, sewn pillowing or sculptured weaves in or above the fabric.
bulletIncorporate COLORS & SIMULATION of the soiling environment, especially autumn colors for dirt prone areas. Match type of colors for type of soiling.
bulletIncorporate MULTICOLOR schemes and themes.

Family News

We are growing very quickly these days. The boys outgrow clothes (it seems) before their drawer is emptied once. We are happy to see them grow but like most parents, we wish the pace could slow down a little bit!

Christine Loves Helping Others

Chris is ever busy thinking of others. Many give us bags. They contain many things: toys, home decorations, but mostly clothes. She quickly separates items into piles and then bags each pile and names the bag. Someone in church or a neighbor gets the bag very soon. A smile results.

She also keeps busy grocery shopping for us each week. Chris finds the best deals. She has consistently lived on a conservative budget yet has fed us "boys" well.

David

A lover of books is David, and you might have to sit down and hear him read an entire humorous story from his Christian Reading Textbook. He is a builder with intricate detail. He loves to play games and listen to dramas on the Christian radio stations.

Joseph

Joseph is our lover. He hugs and appreciates. He finally learned to ride a bike and now wants to go every chance he can. He also loves to be outside, to splash in pools, and play. He wants to be a good boy.

Pat

Dad is trying to find things to do with the boys.

Recently we purchased poles and tackle to go fishing with another dad in church. After spending the night, only David caught one to keep. The first cast was just after 7 am. We concluded we weren't early enough, and will try some times later this summer and fall. Dad also loves to ride bicycles. It is not odd to see all three "boys" riding to church on Sunday Mornings.

Scotchguard Formulation to Change

3M announced on May 19th that they were discontinuing Scotchguard as of 12-31-2000. Quoting the news release we received from National Trade Publications, they said 3M announced the move when "tests indicated component chemical compounds involved linger in the environment and in the human body for years." And that "no adverse health or environmental effects have been shown, although new testing techniques reveal the presence of the chemicals broadly in human beings, wildlife, water and other areas." A full text version with more informational detail is posted at www.glorycarpetcleaning.com/Scotchguard_Notice.htm. 3M's

Customer Contact for Consumer Products is (Phone) 1-800-364-3577.

We will continue to use our stock but advising our customers of the 3M action, and we will also provide alternatives for any customers so desiring. We furthermore applaud 3M for taking this action for the purpose of "responsible environmental management." Call us if you have a further concern over this.
